GEORGE TOWN: The judges at the Ratu Kebaya 2011 Contest held at Komplexs Bukit Jambul here recently must have a hard time picking the top three winners as the contestants were all pretty maidens dressed in elegant kebaya.
However, it was business management graduate Gaayathri K. Rajakumaran, 23, who won over the judges for the crown.
Gaayathri from Penang scored high marks as she exuded great confidence on stage and displayed poise and style at the catwalk.

She also carried herself well when during question time she answered, "The kebaya is an elegant outfit, a work of art, a classic costume, which fits every one from all races and creeds."

Gaayathri beat 18 contestants to win RM4,000, a 3D/2N stay at a presidential suite at Lone Pine Hotel and other gifts.
"I do not expect to win the crown, as there were so many pretty ladies in their nice kebaya," she said after receiving her prizes.

Gaayathri also won the recent Miss Malaysia World 2011 title.

First runner-up was adviser Nurul Nadia Mohamed Nazri, 22, also from Penang.
A newcomer in beauty contests, she was surprised to be placed among the top three winners.

"If I win, I wish to be a role model for the future generation and promote the wearing of kebaya," was her answer during the question-and-answer round.

Melinda Lee Chen Ling, a 20-year-old college student was second runner-up.

Lee also received a subsidiary title of Miss Talent. During the talent round, she entertained the crowd with a magic show.

Nurul Nadia and Lee received RM3,000 and RM2,000, and gifts respectively.

"I wish to contribute part of my prize money to buy stationery for poor children," said Lee, who is from Penang.

Like Nurul Nadia, Lee was also surprised to be among the top placing.

She said she was not so confident during the question-and-answer round, as contestants were expected to answer in Bahasa Malaysia.

"I hope to be a top model one day," said Lee who is undergoing a modelling course at the Amber Chia Academy here.

Contestants were required to compete in introduction, catwalk, question-and-answer and talent rounds.

Ten subsidiary titles at the contest comprised Miss Perfect Smile, Miss Talent, Miss Photogenic, Miss Body Perfect, Miss Elegant, Miss Personality, Miss Congeniality, Miss Beautiful Skin, Miss Crowning Glory and Miss Popularity.

Student Cynthia Cheok Ching, 24, won two subsidiary titles of Miss Body Perfect and Miss Elegant, while Miss Perfect Smile went to bank employee Norhidayu Mohamed Nor, 28.

Intan Shafinas Kasim, 26, a manager, grapped the Miss Personality title and freelance model Koid Jin Jwu, 26, was Miss Congeniality.
