Beauties all about the kebaya

Monday February 6, 2012

Festive mood: Miss Penang Kebaya 2012 contestants including Tan (second right) joining Jennifer Ann (fourth right) in tossing yee sang at Straits Quay.
BEAUTY and heritage will dovetail when the Miss Penang Kebaya 2012 pageant sashays into the state later this month.
A total of 30 gorgeous lasses are set to grace the catwalk wearing the traditional garments as they vie for titles as well as prizes totalling over RM30,000.
The semi-final is on Feb 17 and the field will be halved for the final on Feb 19, both events starting at 3pm at Gurney Plaza.
The winner alone will walk away with prizes worth RM7,500.
For the top three, further opportunities await. They will represent the state in the Miss Malaysia Kebaya 2012 Grand Final in Kuala Lumpur later this year.
Speaking during a Chinese New Year Loh Yee Sang gathering at event sponsors Charlie Brown Cafe in Straits Quay recently, national organising chairman Vin Wee said the pageant would open up avenues leading to promising careers for participants.
“It’s a great platform for them to show their talent and perso- nality, gain valuable knowledge and experience, and realise their potential. We believe everyone is a winner just for taking part.”
Moreover, with the kebaya being intrinsically linked to South-east Asian heritage, the event also serves to promote tourism and showcase cultural diversity, he added.
With around 1,000 hopefuls auditioning, and 200 qualifying for individual state contests, the pageant is touted as the country’s largest by virtue of numbers.
Later, Wee joined state orga- nising chairman Alan Neo and some of the Penang finalists in a merry yee sang tossing session. The group later enjoyed a sump-tuous dinner courtesy of the cafe.
Participant Tan Yixin, 19, revealed that the opportunity to parade in a kebaya was one of the motivating factors for her.
“I’ve always been interested in wearing one, and I’m very much looking forward to the contest.
“Besides, I get to make lots of new friends, and gain modelling experience too!” she enthused.
Confident of her chances, Tan pledged to give it her best shot.
Another contestant Nadia Aiza Syuhariz Abdul Rahman, 21, said she had often worked as a model during roadshows.
“I have been wearing the kebaya during functions or dinners since I was small.
“I love the outfit, and I have too many kebayas to count!” she quipped.
Also present was the pageant’s Sabah winner, Jennifer Ann Mohaya, 19. Having gained inspiration from her mum, a former beauty queen, she hopes to similarly inspire her contemporaries.
“Winning can definitely set you on the road to your dreams,” she opined.
